How To Start Recycling

If you’re anything like my family, you are creatures of habit. That’s why this week, TerraCycle is offering up some tips for how to break those wasteful habits, get started recycling in your home, and reduce household trash.

Recycling doesn’t have to  be complicated, and it doesn’t have to be a difficult habit to change or implement. It can be as simple as putting a piece of trash in one bin instead of another. The kids can be easily engaged with crafty do-it-yourself upcycling projects that teach them how to recycle and reuse, while instilling the habit of thinking about how to use what is already in front of them – an important step in cutting down on waste.

1.) How do you try to make recycling easier for your whole family?  We have the bins put conviently  right beside the trash can.  This way it’s just as easy to put their things in the bin as the trash.

We make things easier by turning our small back room into the “recycling room”. There are two kitchen trash cans that the kids can throw the recyclables into. Every two or three days we empty that into the large recycling trash cans that the crews come and empty once a week. We fill up two of them every week! We do single stream recycling here..and because we made it so easy to recycle at our house we went from lots of trash.. To one bag per week for a family of five. We plan on composting as well, which will make it even easier to cut down on waste in the landfill. Monika. Simms@comcast. Net

We have bins for newspaper, and a terracycle bin & bags to help sort through it. Our kids participate by placing the used containers into the appropriate bins/bags. By teaching our kids the importance of recycling and reducing waste we are taking one step to making the world sustainable and better for them and their children as they will pass this knowledge on.

I try to teach my children to be good stewards of the earth through our organic gardening efforts, using cloth diapers, and generally trying no to be wasteful.  We try to include the kids on our efforts since they are home with us all the time.  We don’t have recycling facilities near us but we try to reuse items that would normally be thrown away and I try to find new uses for old stuff.

My daughter all on her own will come up with ideas for what we should make from empty containers b/c she knows what is what we do. She came in from the yard with plastic plant flat and wanted to make it into a baby doll bed. And we did!

We have recycle bins at home which we will deposit in the near by library..  This trip will earn donuts on our way back
