Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil

I’ve been a fan of coconut oil for some time now, so I was eager to try Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil.  What I really liked is that they don’t just sell you coconut oil; they do their best to educate you about what you’re buying.

You may think people are crazy to consume a saturated fat like coconut oil, since the popular consensus is that unsaturated fats like canola, olive, and soy oils are healthier.   But when these oils are hydrogenated they become trans fats, which should be avoided because of their contribution to heart disease.   Coconut oil already saturated; there is very little unsaturated content that could convert to trans fat.  The PR campaign against “tropical oils” in recent decades led to the widespread belief that coconut oil is bad for you.  But nothing could be further from the truth!

I used my sample of Virgin Coconut Oil in my morning smoothies.  I normally mix some chocolate-flavored whey protein with raw milk for breakfast, and I’ve been added a tablespoon or so of virgin coconut oil to it lately.   For one thing, it makes the concoction taste better, but I really think the addition of coconut oil keeps me feeling more satisfied and full longer too.  Keep in mind that the melting point of coconut oil is 76 degrees, so if you add it to cold milk it will cool and turn solid.  I add it as a liquid and stir the milk vigorously so I don’t end up with big chunks of coconut oil as it solidifies.  This seems to work and it mixes together fairly well, but if you just poured coconut oil into a cold milk you’d probably end up with a big lump at the bottom of your glass!

Of course, there are many other ways to use this product.  If you’re interested in learning more about the many uses of coconut oil, I urge you to check out the wealth of information at the Tropical Traditions website.
