Let’s talk groceries.  More specifically, let’s talk about your grocery budget.

Your grocery bill can be one of the largest drains on your finances. Tabitha Philen’s ebook Advanced Penny Pinching can help you rein in your unruly food bills and free up extra money to pay off debts or take a vacation!

If there is one thing I know about military life, it is that we love our grocery shopping on a pay week.  Every payday the commissary is full and carts are being loaded down with necessities (and some non-essentials) to last for 2 weeks.

Often, I am shocked when I get in line behind someone spending $200, $300, or more on one single cart of groceries.  Many times families will have 2 or even 3 grocery carts filled to the brim.

Now, I’m not saying that these families don’t need all the food that they buy.  I don’t know their situation.  However, I do know what our family of five spends each paycheck on food.  We have always been very frugal with our grocery bill.   We spend, on average, about $150 every 2 weeks on our main shopping trips.  That includes diapers, dog food, and all the other little extras.

How do we do it?  We pinch pennies.

Advanced Penny Pinching Ebook

Okay, so we don’t sit around and squeeze coins.

We started out very poor in our married life.  When you start out with very little, you learn to be flexible when planning for meals.  Over the years, I have learned how to make our diet healthier and more frugal through lots of little tricks and tips.

But you don’t have to have years of financial struggles to learn how to cut back on your grocery bill.

Tabitha’s book walks you through some of the most simple yet effective steps you can take to start saving money on food:

  • creating a stockpile
  • making a menu and preparing a list before you shop
  • changing your shopping habits

Reality Shows and Extreme Couponing

One of the things I appreciate about the Advanced Penny Pinching book is that it isn’t trying to sell you some technique to save thousands using coupon tactics or running all over town.

Tabitha gives you real advice.  She even has a section dedicated to answering questions about the extreme couponing shows you see on TV- and how those are not reality.

And for those of us who have, at one point or another, really been in a bind- she shares her tips on making it through a week on $50.

I appreciated the honesty and authenticity of Tabitha’s tips and techniques.

Advanced Penny Pinching can help you change the way you think about your grocery budget.  It can’t go out and change your budget for you.  It gives you the resources you need to make positive changes towards conquering your monthly grocery bill.

We pretty much don’t buy anything “convenient” right now. And I’ve been making my own yogurt and bread.
