Using Baking Soda to Clean Naturally

One of the greatest cleaning solutions you have is actually in your kitchen cabinet. Baking soda can do so much from oral hygiene to cleaning your kitchen counters.

Here are a few ways that you can use baking soda to clean your home in a more green and natural way.

Bathroom Fixtures

Keep in mind anytime that you are cleaning with baking soda that it is a slightly abrasive compound. If you have vanities that are sensitive, avoid baking soda on these surfaces. Otherwise, you can use the baking soda on the entire bathroom.

Sprinkle baking soda over your bathroom faucet and in the sink. With a wet sponge, clean surfaces. Rinse well. Do the same for the bathroom and shower.


The toilet is a whole different scenario that other bathroom fixtures. Yes, it can be cleaned with baking soda, but due to its role in the house, it needs a little extra.

Take a little baking soda and mix with four times the amount vinegar. Pour it into your toilet and use the brush to clean the sides. Let it set for a few minutes before flushing.


Your entire kitchen could be cleaned with just baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice. Tough stains should be treated first with lemon juice and then scrubbed with baking soda. Any item needing disinfecting needs vinegar added to the baking soda to neutralize the odors.

It is also great as an oven cleaner. Mix with water or vinegar to form a paste. Cover inside of oven with the mixture while avoiding any burn elements. Let sit for 30 minutes to an hour and then scrub clean.

More Uses

  • Drains – Don’t wait until you need a plumber to clean out your drains. Use baking soda sprinkled in your drain followed by hot water or vinegar.
  • Carpet Cleaner – Sprinkle baking soda in your carpet and let it sit for 15 – 20 minutes. Vacuum up. No harsh chemicals.
  • Pet Bath – You don’t have to buy expensive dog or cat shampoos. Just sprinkle baking soda on them and after a few minutes brush out. Any baking soda left in the fur will continue to neutralize smells.

When you baking soda, you can rest assured that it is safe for your family and your pets. It won’t harm you if digested (as long as it is not the whole box) and it continues to work long after you are done cleaning.
