Feb.14 may mark the day that you shower your mate with romantic gifts and gestures to prove your love, but Galentine’s Day—which appropriately falls on Feb. 13— is all about celebrating the love for your female best friends. Ok, so it might not be a real holiday—the hysterical writers of Parks and Recreation made it up. But it’s an excellent way to join in on the Valentine’s Day fun without being bitter in the process if you or a friend happens to be single.
Celebrating what some call Single Awareness Day (S.A.D) is not an option. Plus, you get to express your love and appreciation to the most important women in your life. That said, to learn three great ways to celebrate Galentine’s Day this year, continue reading below.
1. Have Breakfast/Brunch/Lunch/Dinner
Like the quirky ladies of Parks and Recreation, having a fun meal with your gals is a great way to celebrate—and since technically Galentine’s Day falls on the day before Valentine’s Day, you shouldn’t have a hard time finding reservations to the restaurant-of-choice. So no matter if you choose to have a low-key celebration at the local diner or have a fancy dinner at the new sushi restaurant downtown, food is always a great way to bring people closer together.
If you and your lady friends rather stay in to save some money however, grab a few bottles of wine or champagne, a fondue kit, make a heart-shaped pizza (or order one from your local pizzeria, like Papa John’s) and have a good time within the confinements of your home.
2. Go to the Spa
Rejuvenating the body and indulging in a day of pampering is a great way to distress and enjoy some quality time with your besties. No matter if you get the works or simply get a facial or a mani and pedi, the spa is a great retreat for you and your friends. Most spas even offer complimentary glasses of champagne and other beverages so you and your friends can relax even further. While having your girl-talk time, just remember to be positive and avoid talking about love in a negative way–no need to man bash.
3. Have a Movie Day
Whatever you all decide to watch, just make sure to steer clear of sappy love movies. This year’s no-brainer to avoid is The Vow, which is a movie adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks book under the same name. Instead, go for a comedy. Laughing releases endorphins, chemicals that make you “feel good.” Or you could have a little fun with your gals and throw a horror movie Valentine’s Day marathon instead. Most are cheesy and will evoke laughter rather than fear anyway.
Our top picks are: Valentine, Bride of Chucky, My Bloody Valentine (the original or 3D version) and Fatal Attraction. Of course, you could also choose flicks that celebrate the value of friendships as well, like Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Steel Magnolias, Now and Then, and Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion just to name a few.
