Shortly after we started making lapbooks in our unit studies, I discovered notebooking.  I loved the idea that you could use notebooking with any subject, topic, and age group.  I started out by printing free pages from various online sources.  Eventually I was making my own notebooking sets and sharing them.

Notebooking is sort-of like journaling.  After reading about a topic, doing research, or some other learning activity, the student records his/her thoughts and observations onto paper through writing and drawing.

How Notebooking Success Improved Our Experience

I love the free notebooking pages that Jimmie shares over at The Notebooking Fairy.  When I saw that she had written an ebook on how to implement notebooking, I didn’t really think I needed it.  We already used notebooking, so what more was there to learn?

It turns out, there was much more to notebooking that I ever imagined.

Notebooking Success explains how to:

  • let children take ownership of their learning
  • use notebooking for various homeschooling styles
  • add in elements such as lapbooks, post cards, and much more

I was surprised at some of the simple things I was failing to implement in our notebooking, such as letting the child organize the binders and help plan what pages would be used.

The book was easy to read in one sitting, but useful enough to print out and keep as a handy reference.

Free Bonuses With The Ebook

Along with the main ebook, Jimmie includes bonus resources for your notebooking success.

If you wonder about how much notebooking you should use with a certain age group, or what to expect- there is a set of grade specific sheets that are handy to print out and keep in your files for reference.

My favorite bonus freebie is 50 Things to Put into a Notebook. This awesome printable lists all the things, besides a notebooking page, you can add to your notebooks to give them depth and vibrance.  Anything and everything from puzzles to paper dolls are listed!

This will be my first year to homeschool my 6th and 7th grade boys. I feel that notebooking would be most beneficial for them. In public school, they had a lot of reading comprehension activities. Unfortunately they did not do so well at it. I feel that notebooking will help them enormously in that area. I just wish I would have adopted the Charlotte Mason method of narrating when they were young. :(

We use notebooking with science, but I am definitely branching out and doing more subjects next year. I like that my boys are creating almost a scrapbook of learning, and my boys love to draw so it helps them retain the info in a fun way. There are so many things that can be added to a notebook. It is overwhelming but think it will get easier and more intuitive as we use them in our homeschool longer.

We use it a little. I’d like to add it in more. We’ve used it for the history of our city and for anything the kids want to study. For example, my son is doing a notebook on basketball.

Now that my daughter has learned basic reading and writing, I’d love to learn how to incorporate notebooking into our lessons.

I keep several informal notebooks as well. I have always had one for poetry, plus I keep a budget notebook, a notebook for writing ideas, and a bible study/prayer notebook!
